5 Home Color Trends of 2024

Every new year brings anticipation and excitement about home color trends that will dominate the design world for the year. This is largely due to color of the year announcements from companies such as Pantone, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and more. Experts extensively research, deliberate, and ultimately select colors that they believe will take over the design world for the year. For 2024 predictions run the gamut and range from colors such as bold hues being used as neutrals all the way to soft soothing blues.

Before we jump into color trends for this year, I thought it would be fun to get a little background and history on when color of the year announcements started and how companies go about making their color of the year selections.

Color of the Year History

Even though the original color of the year was started by paint company Pratt and Lambert in 1996, it didn't become a widespread trend until 1999 when the Pantone Color Institute announced their color of the year as Cerulean blue. That announcement triggered all the major paint companies to realize this was potentially a great marketing tool. They jumped on the color of the year bandwagon and haven't looked back since.

The process these companies use to select their color of the year takes teams of professionals months of analysis and research. These teams often include experts in the fields of interior design, graphic design, and fine art. Some of the categories they analyze to narrow down color selections are cultural trends, social media, food, and technology. They also take into consideration current events such as the pandemic and the country's current state of economics, an example was in 2008 they considered the financial crisis and warm soothing neutral hues took front stage.

Now for the much-anticipated home color trends for 2024!

1. Bold Hues

Go bold! A big trend you will start seeing this year will be designers using bold colors as neutrals through a space by carrying a consistent color palette throughout a home. Using bolder hues as neutrals can add interest and depth to your space, and carrying the color throughout a home is a great way to tie it all together.

2. Shades of Green

Green has been a popular color in interior design for the past couple of years and it will continue to be a prominent color in design for 2024. However, this year you will see designs cover a wide spectrum of different shades of green. From dark forest greens to middle shades such as olive green, all the way to very light shades like mint.

3. Soft black

Dark moody colors still are reigning supreme in 2024. Soft black is going to be a neutral frequently chosen over lighter neutrals as the dominant color for spaces. It's moody but still inviting and has a cozy feel, especially when paired with the equally popular lighter warm wood tones that have been prevalent the last few years.

4. Tone-on-Tone

Tone on Tone colors in interior design and fashion have the tendency to come off as looking effortlessly sophisticated and chic. If you are looking for an easy way to elevate your home and give it a luxe, feel in 2024 go for tone-on-tone decor. Choose different shades of the same color and layer them in your space with different patterns and textures.

5. Shades of Blue

While blue is a classic that never really goes out of style, in 2024 blues are going to be especially popular since Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and Valspar all chose different shades of blue for their color of the year. Depending on the shade of blue you choose you can make a space feel calm and relaxed or energized and lively.
